Common Mistakes in Document Photos

Even a photo that looks great to you might be rejected by official systems if it doesn’t meet strict requirements. Government-issued IDs like Aadhaar, PAN cards, passports, and visas all have specific photo standards. Minor errors in background, lighting, or facial expression can lead to delays or rejections.

Understanding these common mistakes—and how to avoid them—can save you time, money, and frustration.

Mistakes to Avoid

Below are the most frequent mistakes people make when submitting ID or document photos:

  • Smiling or Unnatural Expressions: Most official photo requirements call for a neutral expression, with your mouth closed and eyes open. Smiling, frowning, or raising your eyebrows may cause your photo to be rejected.

  • Background Clutter or Wrong Colors: Many photos are rejected because the background is not plain enough. Avoid:

    • Patterned or dark walls
    • Visible objects like furniture, curtains, or picture frames
    • The wrong color background (e.g., bright colors instead of white/light blue)
  • Wearing Glasses, Hats, or Accessories: Unless medically necessary (or religious headwear that does not cover your face), glasses, hats, or earbuds should be removed. Reflections from glasses, or shadows from brims and accessories, can obscure your facial features.

  • Poor Resolution or Lighting:

    • Blurry or pixelated images are not acceptable.
    • Photos with harsh shadows, glare, or uneven lighting may hide parts of your face.
    • Avoid backlighting, as it darkens your face.
    • Make sure your photo is sharp, well-lit, and in high resolution.
  • Face Not Fully Visible: Cropping too close or leaving parts of the head or chin out of the frame is a common error. Make sure your full head and shoulders are visible, centered, and not tilted.

  • Incorrect File Size or Format: Even technically perfect photos can be rejected if they are not in the required format (usually JPEG) or exceed size limits (e.g., Aadhaar: 20–50 KB, PAN: under 20 KB for photo, 10 KB for signature).
